Review

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen’s works are a paragon of wit, elegance, and refinement. Her novels have stood the test of time, captivating readers for centuries with their clever characters, intricate plots, and subtle romance. But what would Jane Austen have to say about a movie like “The Mangler?” A film about a possessed industrial laundry machine that seeks vengeance on its human operators may seem far removed from the genteel world of Regency England. Yet, even a master of manners and morals like Austen would surely appreciate the artistry and ingenuity behind this thrilling horror flick.

At its core, “The Mangler” is a classic tale of hubris and comeuppance. The story centers around Bill Gartley (played by Robert Englund), the ruthless owner of a textile factory in rural Maine. Gartley’s pride in his business is matched only by his disdain for his working-class employees, whom he sees as nothing more than disposable tools to be used and discarded at his whim. But when a new industrial laundry machine known as “the mangler” arrives at the factory, Gartley soon learns that even he is not immune to the machine’s deadly power.

As workers begin to disappear or meet gruesome fates at the hands of the mangler, Gartley refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing on his part. He insists that the machine must be faulty or that his workers are simply careless or drunk on the job. It is not until Gartley himself becomes trapped in the mangler’s gears that he realizes too late the folly of his arrogance.

Throughout “The Mangler,” director Tobe Hooper employs classic horror tropes with aplomb. The eerie setting of an old-fashioned factory lends itself well to scenes of creeping dread and claustrophobia. The sound design is hauntingly effective, with metallic screeches and thuds punctuating moments of grisly violence. And the visual effects used to bring the mangler to life are surprisingly effective, considering the film’s modest budget.

Of course, a good horror movie is nothing without a strong cast of characters to root for (or against). Englund (who horror fans will recognize as the iconic Freddy Krueger) delivers a delightfully hammy performance as Gartley. He revels in the character’s villainy, snarling each line with gleeful malice. Ted Levine also shines as John Hunton, the hard-boiled detective tasked with investigating the factory’s bizarre deaths. Hunton is a classic noir hero, all grit and determination even in the face of supernatural horrors.

Perhaps one of Austen’s most famous lines comes from “Pride and Prejudice”: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” In “The Mangler,” we might say that it is a truth universally acknowledged that any machine in possession of malevolent sentience must be in want of human blood. And indeed, there is something undeniably chilling about seeing an ordinary object like an industrial washing machine become an instrument of terror.

At its heart, “The Mangler” may seem like pure schlock on the surface. But beneath its grisly exterior lies a story with timeless themes and clever execution. In many ways, it serves as a reminder that even those who appear to have all the power and control can ultimately be brought down by their own hubris. It’s not quite Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet trading barbs across ballroom floors, but it certainly has its own twisted charm.

So if you’re looking for something out-of-the-ordinary to watch this Halloween season – or if you simply enjoy a good scare any time of year – don’t overlook “The Mangler.” It may not be everyone’s cup of tea (or Austen-themed teacup, for that matter), but there is something to be said for a movie that can make you jump and shudder even as it sends shivers down your spine.
