Review
Us, the critically acclaimed psychological horror-thriller movie by Jordan Peele, took over the box office and left audiences in awe. The film is a follow-up to Peele’s successful 2017 debut feature, Get Out. In Us, we see an entirely different storyline that is as terrifying as it is captivating.
The film’s plot follows a family of four on vacation in Santa Cruz, California. Later during their stay, they encounter their doppelgĂ€ngers (clones) who are determined to kill them for unknown reasons. What follows is a thrilling and unsettling tale of self-discovery and coming face-to-face with one’s own fears.
The cast of Us was headlined by Lupita Nyong’o, who gave a stunning performance in her dual role as Adelaide Wilson and Red. Other notable cast members include Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex and Elisabeth Moss.
Peele’s script delves into themes of identity politics, mental illness and societal issues through the use of horror allegory. “For me, this movie is about maybe the monster is you,” Peele said in an interview with NPR. “It kind of conveys that we need to look at ourselves as individuals and confront our demons.”
One stand out element in Us was its incredible score by Michael Abels. The haunting soundscapes added layers of tension to already nerve-racking scenes. The music runs seamlessly throughout the film’s runtime; it was eerie yet beautiful.
Us received widespread critical acclaim upon release with many praising Peele for his unique vision and attention to detail in every aspect of the film-making process, from casting to production design to sound effects.
However, some critics felt that Us didn’t live up to its predecessor Get Out’s high standards or lacked clear character motivation or pacing issues.
Despite these criticisms, Us received positive audience reception globally by grossing over $255 million worldwide against a $20 million budget.
Filming for Us took place in various locations across California, including Santa Cruz. The film’s final battle scene was filmed at the iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Peele created a spooky atmosphere by having the cast members wear red jumpsuits and brandishing gold scissors, which added to the movie’s terrifying aesthetic.
One point of contention among fans of Us was the movie’s ambiguous ending, which left many viewers perplexed about what had just transpired. Peele explained that he intended to give viewers an opportunity to interpret and discuss the ending according to their own perspectives.
In terms of awards, Us received several nominations but won only a few accolades. Lupita Nyong’o won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role while Michael Abels won Best Music at Austin Film Critics Association Awards.
In typical Simon Sinek style, we can take valuable lessons from Us’s success. Jordan Peele’s vision was his driving force through an uncharted territory of horror and tension – he believed in himself, his team and the story he wanted to tell. Ensuring his cast was diverse helped him achieve his message that society needs to confront its demons irrespective of race or social status.
Us is an exceptional film that honors old-school classic horror while adding its own unique twist in storytelling methods that were both timely and resonant with current societal issues.
With its thrilling plot, haunting score, powerful performances and stunning cinematography, Us is not only one of the best horror movies made in recent years but also one that audiences will continue to revisit for years to come.
