Suspiria: A Haunting Tale of Darkness and Mysteries
Maya Angelou once said, “Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.” The words that come to mind upon watching Suspiria are definitely those that cannot be simply set down on paper. This horror classic of 1977 is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, infusing the story with deeper meaning through its stunning visual effects, atmospheric score, and brilliant direction.
The storyline of the movie revolves around a young American dancer who travels to Germany to join a prestigious ballet academy. From here, the plot takes a twisted turn as she finds herself trapped in a world full of darkness and mysteries. The school’s staff and administration are revealed to be part of an ancient sect that worships Mother Suspiriorum, one of three witches who rule the world.
It’s worth noting that Suspiria was directed by Dario Argento, an Italian director known for his unique stylization in cinema. The film’s vivid colors and dreamlike atmosphere create an unsettling feeling that’s hard to shake off even hours after watching it. In fact, Argento described his vision for the film as wanting it to be “a beautiful fairy tale gone wrong.”
Despite its age, Suspiria remains one of the most impactful horror movies ever made. One quote from Argento himself sums up why: “I think horror movies are going to continue being popular because people are fascinated by what scares them.” With its haunting score by Goblin and fascinating storyline, it’s no surprise that Suspiria continues to scare audiences even today.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the performances of its cast. Lead actress Jessica Harper perfectly captures the fear and confusion felt by her character while also bringing depth and humanity to her portrayal. In addition, supporting actors like Stefania Casini and Joan Bennett add to the film’s sense of unease.
One aspect of Suspiria that deservedly receives a lot of attention is its cinematography. Luciano Tovoli’s stunning camerawork adds a sense of otherworldliness to the film, with bright reds and blues contrasting against the dark backgrounds. In one standout scene, light shining through stained glass creates an almost ethereal atmosphere that makes it hard to look away.
As with any horror movie, sound can make or break the overall experience. Arguably, Goblin’s score is one of the most important factors in Suspiria’s success, creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere that perfectly complements the visuals on screen. The use of synth and rock elements in their music was innovative at the time, and remains iconic today.
Despite its popularity among cinephiles, Suspiria has not been immune to criticism. Some have pointed out that its plot can be confusing or even nonsensical at times, while others have criticized its use of gore as excessive. However, these critiques do not detract from the film’s overall impact.
In recent years, Suspiria has found new life in pop culture thanks to a 2018 remake directed by Luca Guadagnino. While some fans were hesitant about whether a remake would live up to expectations, Guadagnino’s take on the story was surprisingly nuanced and thought-provoking. He explored themes like trauma and guilt that were not present in Argento’s version.
Overall, Suspiria remains an essential piece of horror cinema even today. Its influence can be seen in countless contemporary works like Midsommar and Hereditary. Regardless of whether you’re a fan of horror movies or not, this classic is worth watching for its stunning visuals alone. As Maya Angelou once said about art: “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” Suspiria is a testament to the beauty and strength that can come from embracing the darker side of humanity.
