In the realm of cinematography, Running for Grace is a movie that is able to capture the essence of love and forgiveness in a world filled with turmoil. Set in Hawaii during the 1920s, it tells the story of Jo, a young orphan boy who dreams of escaping his life working as a plantation laborer by becoming a doctor. Joining forces with Grace, his childhood love interest, he embarks on an incredible journey filled with challenges and excitement.
The film boasts of an impressive cast, featuring actors such as Matt Dillon and Jim Caviezel, to name a few. At its core though is Ryan Potter’s portrayal of Jo – an admirable character whose courage and tenacity are sure to inspire audiences everywhere.
One can easily see how William Shakespeare would have easily taken this plot and molded it into something that could astound audiences everywhere. The play would have beamed with drama that kept people on the edge of their seats while still keeping them engaged emotionally.
The story starts with Jo struggling through life as an impoverished laborer on the plantation owned by Dr. Hilo Hale (Matt Dillon). Dr. Hilo initially detests Jo but sees potential in him when he displays intelligence beyond his years by curing a patient diagnosed with tetanus. Over time, Dr. Hilo takes him under his wing as his apprentice.
Despite all that’s going on around him, Jo never forgets about Grace (Olivia Ritchie), his childhood friend who grows up alongside him at the plantation. While she has dreams of leaving Hawaii to attend college in New York City someday, she becomes drawn back towards Jo as they grow older.
As they eventually fall in love, their bond becomes threatened when her father (Jim Caviezel) becomes disapproving of their relationship – largely due to their differing social standings. He wants her to marry someone from her own class – someone who has money, stability and prestige.
Undeterred by the objections of her father, Grace runs away from home to be with Jo. The two venture off together and marry in a beautiful ceremony that is testament to their love for each other.
As with any Shakespearean play, the drama doesn’t end at the marriage. The couple face struggles and trials that test their loyalty to each other. From violence to heartbreak, they have to navigate through a variety of challenges in order to maintain their relationship.
Their journey takes us on a tour of Hawaii’s breathtaking landscapes as scenes are set on beaches, mountains and villages all over the island. Filming landscapes endemic to Hawaii didn’t hurt the film’s popularity either as it was received well not only in Hawaii but also across several countries including Australia, France and the United States.
The score for Running for Grace also deserves special mention as it adds depth and emotionality to the story. Composed mainly by Naoki Sato, it helps bring out moments of tension and triumph while keeping audiences captivated all throughout.
One can argue that Running For Grace can be compared with another Shakespearean classic – Romeo & Juliet. Both stories share themes such as fighting against impossible odds in order to uphold love despite social boundaries or parental objections.
Despite its powerful storyline though, critics have been divided about Running for Grace’s appeal with some deeming it too predictable while others have lauded it for its compelling story made even more interesting by its stunning visuals. While this has been case, audiences’ opinions differ wildly as reports suggest that those who’ve seen it often speak of its message on love being universal – something everyone can identify with.
