When it comes to films, there are many genres and sub-genres that cater to people’s individual tastes. Some people love a good chick-flick, while others prefer something that will keep them on the edge of their seats with fear. However, if you’re looking for something a little different – something that is bold, unique and altogether intriguing – then you simply must check out “He Never Died.”
Directed by newcomer Jason Krawczyk and starring the incomparable Henry Rollins as the enigmatic Jack, this film has been making waves since its release in 2015. But what exactly makes “He Never Died” so special? Well, let’s break it down.
Firstly, let’s take a look at the storyline. On the surface, “He Never Died” appears to be your standard horror flick: Jack is an immortal cannibal who keeps to himself in order to avoid drawing attention to his unusual abilities. However, things start to get complicated when he unwittingly gets involved with local underworld types who try to steal from him.
It might sound like pretty typical fare for horror fans – but don’t be fooled. “He Never Died” is so much more than just another gore-fest. Beneath its seemingly straightforward exterior lies an intricately woven tale of redemption and personal growth.
At its core, the film is about Jack learning how to connect with other human beings despite his innate (and somewhat terrifying) otherness. It’s about him coming out of his shell and finding ways to interact with the world around him – even if that world happens to be full of mobsters and drug dealers.
This brings us nicely onto one of the standout features of “He Never Died”: Henry Rollins’ absolutely stunning performance as Jack. If you’ve ever seen Rollins perform live or watched him on TV or in film before, then you’ll know that he has a certain intensity about him that is hard to match.
In “He Never Died,” Rollins takes that intensity and dials it up to 11. Despite the fact that Jack is technically a cannibal (albeit one with a conscience – sort of), Rollins manages to imbue him with a genuine sense of humanity and depth.
From the way he interacts with his estranged daughter Andrea (played by Jordan Todosey) to his gruff but oddly endearing conversations with waitress Cara (played by Kate Greenhouse), Rollins manages to make Jack both terrifyingly otherworldly and weirdly relatable all at once.
Of course, it’s not just Rollins who deserves praise for his work on “He Never Died.” The film boasts a strong supporting cast, including Todosey, Greenhouse, and Don Francks as mob boss Steve. Despite having relatively little screen time, each actor manages to leave an impression – especially Todosey as Andrea, whose rebellious spirit and fierce determination are equal parts hilarious and heartwarming.
The script itself is also brilliantly written. It’s darkly funny in places without ever feeling like it’s trying too hard to be edgy or subversive. There are some genuinely touching moments of connection between the characters that manage to avoid feeling cheesy or overly sentimental.
And then there’s the score – which was written by Canadian post-rock band Greys. It’s haunting and ethereal, perfectly complementing both the eerie vibe of the film and Jack’s own sense of detachment from the world around him.
Speaking of eerie vibes, let’s talk about the cinematography for a moment. Krawczyk uses a lot of close-ups throughout the film – especially when it comes to Jack himself – which helps to create a sense of intimacy with the audience.
The camera work also reinforces Jack’s status as an outsider: he often appears separated from those around him by either shadows or sharp angles. These visual cues help to drive home the sense of unease that permeates the film.
It’s not just the camera work, though – there are some genuinely striking moments of visual storytelling in “He Never Died” that help to set it apart from other horror films. For example, when Jack is first introduced, we see him sitting in his dingy apartment eating raw meat straight from the package.
The whole scene is bathed in a sickly yellow light that makes everything look even grimmer than it already did. It’s a simple shot, but it does an amazing job of setting the tone for the rest of the film – something Krawczyk and his team do time and time again throughout.
What else can be said about “He Never Died”? It’s won awards at several film festivals, including Best Canadian Feature Film at the Fantasia International Film Festival. It’s been praised by critics and fans alike for its unique take on a tired genre.
It’s a bold and exciting debut from Krawczyk, who has since gone on to direct several more films (including another collaboration with Rollins). And it’s one of those rare films that manages to truly surprise you – whether you’re into horror or not.
